Maxine Metcalf Maynard, 85, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022.
Mrs. Maynard was born in Buncombe County to the late Rumbo and Christine Gosnell Metcalf. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Grover Ernest Maynard; one brother and three sisters.
Maxine was a member of Long Shoals Baptist Church. She graduated Cecil’s Business College with a degree in Accounting and retired from Cutler Hammer. She also worked many years at the Waffle House on Long Shoals Road as a Hostess. She loved clogging and singing and loved her family dearly especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children; Ronald Maynard, Sherry Heitmann (Dennis) and Brandon Maynard (Michelle); nine grandchildren, Chad, Hunter, Zachary, Taylor, Caylyn, Kelsey, Colton, Mason and Madison; eight great grandchildren, Sadie, Nash, Raelynn, Kinley, Ella, Hudson, Johannah and Harrison.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Avery’s Creek Christian Church.

Maxine (Mrs. Maynard to many, as a substitute at Avery’s Creek) was such a sweet lady and a delight to have in the classroom when she subbed. She was always smiling and kind to all the children. I’m so sorry to hear of her passing, but am glad to have known her.

Dear Family, Maxine was a very sweet , kind, and loving woman. I got to know her at the station above Waffle House. She loved her family dearly. I miss our little talks when she came to get gas. So sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. Ramona

I first met Maxine, when she substituted at the Roberson High School Progressive Education Program, the PEP, with Buncombe County Schools. I was the Music Teacher. Maxine also substituted at Avery’s Creek Elementary, ACES, where I also taught. She was always so friendly, polite, and sweet. Once I retired, I then substituted at Avery’s Creek, for several years. We often saw each other. Maxine always talked about her children, and grand children, some who attended ACES. What a sweet Christian lady. She will be missed…
