Merton Lunsford Almond Brown

Merton Lunsford Almond Brown, 92, of Leicester, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2012, at the Laurels of Greentree Ridge, following a very brief illness.
Mrs. Brown was born July 19, 1920, in Marion, NC, and was the daughter of the late Nellie Triplett Lunsford and Bascom Lamar Lunsford. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Howard Nelson Almond and Sherrill Baxter Brown, a daughter, Nancy Brown King, a brother, Lamar Lunsford, sisters, Kern Lunsford, Lynn Hadley, Ellen Boza, Nellie Greenawald and Jo Herron, and a great-granddaughter, Anna Brooks.
Mrs. Brown was a lifelong member of Western Chapel United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and worked with the youth when she was younger.
She attended Berea College and worked at Miller Printing Company and for Dr. John Kerr.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen Almond Davis and husband, Robert of Gastonia and Barbara Brown Wells and husband, Keith, of Leicester; two sons, Nelson Triplett Almond and Grover Charlie Brown and wife, Margaret, of Leicester; thirteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Edna Lunsford of Leicester and a brother-in-law, Lewis Herron and wife, Polly, of Asheville.
A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Leicester Episcopal Cemetery with the Rev. Ed Worley officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials my made to the WNC Rescue Mission Ministry, PO Box 909, Asheville, NC 28802, or to the Salvation Army, 204 Haywood Street, Asheville, NC 28801.
The family extends special words of appreciation to Dr. James McMillan, Mrs. Brown's physician for many years, and to Margie, Diana and Homer Sharpe for many years of excellent help and care, and to Dr. Ann Lansing and the staff at the Laurels of Greentree Ridge for the love and genuine compassion shown to their mother and entire family.
Merton had a long life and much love from her family. I remember her as thoughtful and gentle person, both from childhood when we visited Aunt Nellie and Uncle Bascomb on Turkey creek and all the years since.
