Michael “Baron” McDonagh, Jr., 43, of Arden, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 23, 2023 in his residence.

Born in Elizabeth City, NC, he was the son of Michael “Barry” McDonagh and his wife Myra (Pickett) of Arden and Marianna (Sawyer) Stanton and her husband Wade of Hertford, NC. He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, John T. McDonagh, and an uncle, Matthew G. McDonagh.

Baron was always smiling and loved to joke around with others. A happy-go-lucky person with a zest for live, he always lived each day to the fullest. Baron was a loving father and son and saw the best in everyone.

In addition to his parents and step-parents, he is survived by two sons: Kaven J. McDonagh of Asheville and Michael “Knight” Cassidy of Colorado Springs, CO; two brothers: Jarred and Jake Stanton, both of Hertford, NC; three sisters: Jaime Pepin of Orlando, FL, Casie Morris of Sandy, OR, and Haley McDonagh of Arden; his paternal grandmother, Edith “Mike” McDonagh of Asheville; his Aunt Casey and Uncle Bob Braddock of Asheville; his uncles Jack T. and Patrick McDonagh, both of Asheville; and cousins Kate McDonagh Sonokus and her husband Brian and Jen Braddock, all of Asheville; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Fr. Adrian Porras officiating. Friends will be received following the service at the funeral home.

    I’m so sorry for your loss. Baron was a great friend. Even though we had lost touch over the years, I was never surprised when he’d pop in at my dads around a holiday to see if I was in town. We had some great times, he was always laughing and making sure everyone had fun. He watched out for me in any way he could. I’ll always have fond memories of those days. He’s gone too soon. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
