Michelle Rene Edwards Mattox, 70, of Swannanoa, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at Memorial Mission Campus.
Born in Concord, NC she was a daughter of the late William F. Edwards and Irene Smith Edwards. She is also preceded in death by her sister, Schaly Brookes.
Mrs. Mattox worked as a nurse at the Charles George VA Medical Center for 27 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Keith Mattox; a step- daughter, Sara Staab and husband David of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Leonard, Deanna, Ada and Isaiah; two special nieces, Danielle Brooks and Melanie Orr and several other great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 2:00pm Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church at 531 Haywood Rd. with Rev. Buddy Corbin officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SECU Cancer Center 21 Hospital Dr. Asheville, NC 28801.
Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Rd. is assisting with arrangements.
So sorry for your loss. Michelle was such a sweet lady and always concerned about others. Heaven gained a special angel when he called her home. Our prayers are with you Tom and family
I for one of many am very glad to say she was a friend who touched my life greatly. I was very glad to share missionary journeys to Nicaragua. But how sad can I be to know right now in heaven she is watching over all of us now. But now I just give my prayers love and hugs too her family.
We are saddened by the loss of Michelle. Her love for life and her church was inspiring, and seeing you two together was a joy. Tom, I hope you hang on to the sweet memories you had together…of lives well lived.
Tom I am sorry to hear about Michelle. I enjoyed working with Michelle. She was an excellent nurse and her patients loved her. She will be greatly missed. May God give you peace during this difficult time
Our hearts break for this loss. Michelle was one of a kind fabulous.She was a great example to our entire family.

I am saddened by Michelle’s passing. She was such a great Christlike example for the rest of us. Praying for peace and happy memories for all who mourn her.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Although I never worked directly with Michelle, she was always so friendly and nice to me, very professional, and a great asset to our veterans. Tom,I just learned of Michelle’s passing.I can’t begin to tell you how so very sorry I was to hear this. She lived in my neighborhood many years ago and I had the pleasure of working with her for many years at the VA.She was truly a sweet and kind lady and she will be missed by many.The two of you were so good together and I know you miss her everyday.You have a lot of very special memories,that will always be with you.
