Mickey A. Goodman
April 7, 1941 ~ April 27, 2024
Born in:
Salisbury, North Carolina
Resided in:
Asheville, North Carolina
God, in his infinite wisdom, called Michael Alvin Goodman, who went by Mickey, to his eternal rest on April 27th, 2024. He was 83 years old.
A native of Rowan County, he was the son of the late Enoch and Dorothy Hedrick Goodman. Mickey was a 1959 graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury, NC, and a 1963 graduate of North Carolina State University, earning his degree in Civil Engineering. While at NC State Mickey joined Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and played on the University golf team. After satisfying his military obligation in the United States Army Reserves, he spent the next 45 years learning and managing the family construction business, serving as President KOTM from 1995 until his retirement in 2010. He was a long time member of Central United Methodist Church and the Country Club of Asheville. Mickey was a faithful and loyal friend who enjoyed contributing generously to various charities, scholarships, capital and endowment campaigns. He was looking forward to managing the MAG Family Foundation.
Mickey had many passions in his life, but none was more important to him than his family. He was married to his beloved wife, Kay (aka Honey), for almost 59 years. As a father he was an inspiration and a confidant, a wonderful dad with the highest integrity. Buzz, as he was affectionately named in 2001 and then by special request in 2022 came to be known as Gramps, was always caring and concerned for his family, and it showed through his encouragement, support and unwavering, quiet resolve to see a commitment or project to fruition. Family was the most important thing to him.
It would be hard to mention Mickey without acknowledging his enthusiasm for golf, khaki pants and white, short sleeved collared shirts. If not in his uniform, Mickey was on the course. He took trips all over the world to play the game with family and friends. In his younger years he was Club Champion at Salisbury Country Club and he has numerous tournament titles and ace bragging rights. Mickey’s love for golf ran so deep that he gave his daughters one condition when planning their weddings, it must not fall on Masters Weekend.
Survivors include wife Karen Nussman Goodman, who goes by Kay; daughters Louisa Goodman Davis and husband Gene of Greenville, South Carolina and Lauren Hadley Goodman Cropp and husband Kevin of Asheville; grandchildren Lila Mackenzie Davis, William Enoch Davis, who goes by Liam, and Day Emerson Cropp; brother Jeffrey Vance Goodman and wife Dianna of Asheville; sister Gail Goodman Settle and husband Dan of Ft. Worth, Texas.
We thank God for giving us Mickey, and for allowing him such a full and rich life among us. His imprint on our lives will be everlasting.

So sorry for your loss. Kay I am sure you will miss him dearly.
My favorite Mickey Goodman memory was at one of Louisa’s birthday slumber parties, when we gathered around the TV after dinner to watch Dallas. Near the starting time of the show, Mickey waded through the crowd of excited 12 year old girls with a handful of quarters. As he handed us each a quarter (you could buy a lot of gum with 25 cents!), he gleefully announced that he was taking bets on the question that was haunting the nation: Who shot JR? This was November 21, 1980 – the night of the long awaited revelation – and the JR Ewing frenzy was at its peak. As everyone called out names and definitively decided on Sue Ellen, we promised to return the quarters if we were wrong. The stakes were high, but we were sure we were right. This is the night I learned about the excitement of gambling, and the pain of losing it all ;-). By the end of the show, faced with a room of wound up Dr. Pepper fueled pre-teens, Mickey magnanimously announced that we could keep our quarters, a party souvenir to remember the event. Though the quarter was long ago lost to a gumball machine, I’ll never forget the twinkle in his eye and the spirit of fun and adventure that followed Mickey. I’m remembering him with fondness and love, and mourning with the whole Goodman clan in their loss.
