Mildred Jones Whisnant, 86, of Asheville, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, after a lingering illness.
Miss Whisnant was born October 27, 1919, in Granite Falls, and was a daughter of the late James E. and Mettie Jones Whisnant. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles E. Whisnant.
She was a well known employee of Proctor’s Shoe Salon, the John Carroll Store, and Tops for Shoes for a combined 50 years.
In Asheville, she is survived by J.R. and Sandra Downs, their daughter, Suzanne Downs, son Eric Downs, USN, Norfolk, VA, and long time friend and neighbor, Sylvia B. Revis. In Granite Falls, Miss Whisnant is survived by her sister, Adelaide Whisnant Sullivan and brothers, James B. “Pib” Whisnant and Thomas A. Whisnant. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Graveside services will be 3:15 pm Sunday at Pinecrest Cemetery, Granite Falls, under the direction of Mackie-High Funeral Home.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting with the local arrangements.
