Fairview ~ Mildred Spain Burns, 85, died Saturday, February 24, 2007 at a local hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Alice H. Spain. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James William Burns, who died in 1962.
Mrs. Burns was a 1939 graduate of Biltmore High School and attended St. Genevieve of the Pines Junior College. She was a member of Biltmore United Methodist Church and actively involved in the United Methodist Women, The Fellowship Class and the XYZ Club. For many years, she was associated with the Biltmore Estate Home Extension Club and until recently, was active in pool aerobics at Skyland Recreation Center. Although she was a homemaker for most of her life, she enjoyed working as a private nurse companion for many years, and was associated with Deerfield for part of that time. Her greatest joy in life was her family. She loved to share family history and could entertain you for hours with memories of bygone days
She is survived by two daughters, Beth Waldrep of Hawaii and Cathie Vaughn of Arden, and one grandchild, Greg Vaughn of Asheville.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 1 at Biltmore United Methodist Church with the Reverend Ashley Crowder Stanley officiating.
A private burial will be held at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard in Fletcher.
The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to ABCCM, 30 Cumberland Avenue, Asheville, NC, 28801 or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA, 23058.
The family wishes to express special gratitude to the family, friends, church members, and caregivers whose love, support, selflessness, and friendship are deeply appreciated. We are honored that our mother was treated with the utmost respect and kindness. She will be missed but cherished.

Dear Cathie and Beth:
My thoughts and prayers are with you in the passing of your mother. Mildred and I go back a long way. I was a little boy of 5 when Jimmy and Mildred would visit my father and mother on Roundtop Road. I still remember the dentyne chewing gum Jimmy and Mildred would give me. My last visit with her was at Thoms Rehab several months ago. We enjoyed so much talking about our family and relationships. She was a beautiful lady and will be missed. May God’s grace and peace be with both of you and all the family.

Dear Cathie,
Bill and I are honored to have known Mildred. She knew Bill from Buena Vista Baptist Church when he served as Minister of Music. I met her when she became my mother’s room-mate at Flesher’s. She always greeted us with a big smile and a positive attitude. She and my mother became friends, and were always watching out for each other. My mother sends you her deepest sympathy and prayers, along with my sister Deanna. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless you at this time and the days and months ahead.

My Mother and your Mother have been friends for many, many years, and that friendship was very special to both of them.
