Myrtle Jones Whiteside, 98, formerly of 123 Knob Hill Road died Saturday, June 2, 2001 at the Western North Carolina Baptist Home.

A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County she was a daughter of the late William Carey and Ada Crook Jones. She was also preceded in death by her husband Roy H. Whiteside, an infant son, Tommy Whiteside and a daughter, Faye Gasperson. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend to all and was the oldest member of Bent Creek Baptist Church where she was faithful to attend until her illness.

Survivors include three children, Inez Whiteside, Pat Moore and her husband Tom and Bronson Whiteside and his wife Louise, all of Asheville; a sister, Hazel Fortson of Tallahassee, FL; a brother, Leroy Jones and his wife Nell of Asheville; two sisters-in-law, Viola Jones of Asheville and Marie Jones of Hampton, VA; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday at Bent Creek Baptist Church with the Reverends Ray Talley and Kevin Bennett officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Her family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm Monday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue where her body will remain until being placed in the church thirty minutes before the service. At other times the family will be at the home of Bronson and Louise Whiteside, 97 Knob Hill Road, Asheville.
