Nancy Upshaw Egerton, 92, died April 4, 2018 at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community Skilled Care Section in Asheville.
She was born April 20, 1925 in Raleigh, N.C., to William Francis Upshaw and Myrtle Miller Upshaw. She graduated as valedictorian from St. Mary’s High School in Raleigh and from Duke University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She married Dr. Courtney David Egerton in 1947 and lived in Raleigh until 2000 when they moved to Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville. They also were seasonal residents of Beech Mountain (1969-1980) and Blowing Rock, N.C. (1981-1999).
Mrs. Egerton was a homemaker and active in her community and church. She served in the Junior League of Raleigh and the Wake County Medical Auxiliary. She was a board member with the Wake County United Way. She served as province director of alumnae for Kappa Kappa Gamma, as well as serving in the local alumnae associations in Raleigh and Asheville. She was a longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh. She was also an avid duplicate Bridge player in Raleigh and Asheville.
She is survived by her son Stuart Egerton and his wife, Karen, of Wilmington, N.C.; two daughters, Barbara Tillery and her husband, Tim, of Laurel, MS and Alice Miller of Cumming, GA; three granddaughters, Laura Brady of New York City, Carrie Egerton of Savannah, GA and Charlotte Wessell and her husband, Neill, of New York City. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Courtney Egerton who died in 2009; her brother, William Warner Upshaw and her sister, Mary Bryant Upshaw Lamson.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, April 26, 2017 at the Historical Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh with the Rev. Nan Chandler officiating. The interment of Courtney Egerton’s ashes with his wife also will be celebrated at the service. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Egerton will follow in Asheville on the next day, Friday, April 27 at the Health Care Chapel in Haden Hall at Deerfield at 2:00 PM.
