Nell Evans, 74, of Asheville passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Givens Estates. A native of Sylva, she was a daughter of the late Harry Lee and Mamie Sue Jones Evans and was also preceded in death by a brother, Wallace Evans. A graduate of the University of North Carolina with a degree in pharmacy, she worked as a hospital pharmacist at Duke Hospital in Durham and at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville. Following her retirement, she served as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Miss Evans is survived by a sister, Miriam DuPuy and her husband Monty of Greenville, SC; three nieces, Margot Stewart and her husband Jim, Mary Jennings and her husband Bill, all of Simpsonville, SC and Melissa DuPuy of Nashville, TN; great-nieces, Elizabeth and Mary Glen Howerton, Kate Jennings of Simpsonville; great-nephews, Austin and Matthew Jennings of Simpsonville and a special friend, Bill Van Valkenburg of Asheville. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Marion G. Moore, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 am Friday at the funeral home prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 587 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  2. We are so saddened to hear of Nell’s death. We are traveling in Alaska and will not be able to attend her services. Since moving near us (and also in our Sunday School Class), Nell has come to mean a lot to us. She will be sorely missed. We keep your family in our prayers.
