Asheville ~ Nell Hammett Kelly, 79, of 43 Rock Hill Place went to be with her Heavenly Father Thurs-day, July 13, 2006 at Mission - St. Joseph Hospitals.
She was born in Asheville September 28, 1926. Mrs. Kelly was an LPN at St. Joseph’s Hospital for 37 years, devoting her life to caring for generations of the region’s residents from 1948 until 1985. Mrs. Kelly was daughter of the late Joe Thomas and Nan Carter Hammett and was wife of the late William Furman Kelly, who died in 1980. Mrs. Kelly was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Arden.
She was also an enormously compassionate, gifted and talented woman, also a woman of great diligence, dedication and perseverance. After her retirement from St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1985, she continued to administer to the sick for the next twenty years of her life as a private duty nurse, until July 1, 2005.
She had a remarkable memory and never forgot anyone she had ever met. She loved all people and all creatures great and small. She was a deeply spiritual person and her greatest fulfillment and joy was in knowing and loving her Savior. She was an inspiration to everyone around her, and we will forever love, cherish and miss our beautiful precious, beloved mother.
Surviving is a daughter, Charlotte Kelly of Skyland; two sons, David Kelly of Asheville and William Furman Kelly II and his wife, Virginia of Fall Brook, California; a sister, Mary Dew Rogers of Weaverville.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday in Green Hills Cemetery with Bishop Richard Bowen and Bishop Jeff Racer officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.
David, I am not sure if you remember me from Newton School, but I wanted to express my condolences to you and your family on the loss of your mother. I became a nurse after graduation and worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital where I got to work on occasion with your mother. She was a fine nurse and she really loved her family.
My prayers and sympathy are with you and your family.
SORRY TO HEAR OF YOUR LOSS OF YOUR MOTHER. MS. BARBARA HAS BEEN COMING TO OUR CHURCH FOR A SHORT TIME (TABERNACLE OF PRAISE) AND WE HAVE BEEN PRAYING WITH HER AND FOR YOUR FAMILY. MAY IT BE A COMFORT TO KNOW THAT YOUR MOM IS NOW IN HEAVEN AND IN A MORE PEACEFUL PLACE THAN WE ARE. SHE IS IN THE ARMS OF HER MAKER AND DANCING WITH THE ANGELS. I AM SURE SHE IS ENJOYING THE BEAUTIFUL SIGHT AND SOUNDS WHICH ARE ENDLESS.
