Arden ~ Newell Monroe McDevitt, of Arden died on Monday, September 17, 2007 in a local hospital. He was born in Swain County and was the son of the late Arthur McDevitt and Edna Pilkington Owen. He was preceded in death by His wife, Eva Conner McDevitt and a brother, Jackson McDevitt. Mr. McDevitt was retired from the North Caro-lina Department of Transpor-tation and was a US Army Veteran. He is survived by two sons, Michael and his wife Kelly, who was Mr. McDevitt’s loving caregiver of Candler and Mark McDevitt of Arden; step-daughter, Kathy Gerber and husband Mark of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Brandie, Stephen and Bo McDevitt; two sisters, Marilyn Hall of Hendersonville and Brenda Reese of Asheville; two brothers, Leonard Owen and Kenneth Owen both of Fletcher. A memorial service will be held 3:00 P.M. Wednesday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eliada Home for Children, 2 Compton Drive, Asheville, NC 28806 or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.

  6. Mike / Mark: If our father worked for the Highway Patrol, he was one of the kindest men I knew. I knew a newell McDevitt 30+ years ago and he was so kind.
