Born in: Fayette County, KY
Resided in: Mills River, NC

Mills River – Patricia “Pat” Walters, 82, of Mills River, died Thursday, February 9, 2023 at The Lodge at Mills River.

She was a daughter of the late George and Veda Byrnside Harris. Pat was also preceded in death by her husband, John Lindsay Walters who died in 2007.

Pat was a native of Kentucky but spent her final years in her adopted state of North Carolina. She enjoyed the mountains of Western North Carolina and was a vibrant and kind addition to the High Vista Community in Mills River. Pat shared a home in High Vista with her daughter Lisa and son-in-law David. She made many new friends and reconnected with high school classmates while in North Carolina. Reading and healthy living were two of Pat’s passions, and she actively indulged in both with her community book club and her yoga group. But it was the fellowship these activities afforded her that she valued most of all. Her time in the area was short, but she chose to make the most of it by setting an example of what it means to be a good neighbor. That impression will continue to resonate with the friends that she made and loved so dearly.

Pat is survived by a daughter, Lisa Frazier (Dave) of Mills River; a son, Matthew Walters (Elizabeth) of Lexington, KY; a sister, Sue Harris Scott (Sam) of Carrolton, KY; four grandchildren, Dylan Solise (Jessica), Lindsay Solise, Michaela Burton and David E. Frazier as well as three great-grandchildren, Johnaven Solise, Callum Burton and Veda Solise.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5:00 PM on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.

In lieu of flowers, Pat’s family graciously asks that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Asheville Humane Society (www.ashevillehumane.org).

  4. Lisa, Matt and family: So sorry to hear about your Mom. Ms. Pat was loved by all who knew her. I not only got to know her through church, but was privileged to have her as one of my favorite high school teachers. Will always love Ms Pat!! Our love and prayers are with you all!!

  5. My condolences to Mrs. Walters’ family. Mrs Walters was one of my all time favorite teachers. I learned so much from her I am thankful for, but what I credit her for the most is she inspired me to read. While we normally were assigned books to read, she had us choose our own book for our final project my senior year. I was stuck, so she gave me a book she had read on spring break that year -Stephen King’s The Stand. While not a literary classic, I was instantly hooked on reading just for the sake of reading. And it gave me the license to read just for the pleasure of reading. Thank you Mrs. Walter’s for everything you did for all of your students❤

  6. Lisa, to you and your family our deepest condolences. Your mom always made me smile, she enjoyed life to the fullest.
    Love you all
    Janet & Jeff and Jillian

  7. She was a wonderful teacher that touched so many lives. My prayers are with her family as you heal from her loss. A life that has meaning touches others with inspiration and encouragement. Mrs. Walters did both with joy!

  8. Lisa, David and Family,
We only knew Pat for a short time but like many here in High Vista we remember her as always smiling. We remember celebrating her 80th birthday at High Vista club. She was enjoying that day so much. Our hearts are with you. Sincerely Sky and Susan Tilly

  9. Pat Walters was both an inspiring high school teacher and friend beyond that time… her love of literature was one of my favorite aspects of her personality – only followed by her love of people…

  10. Pat was indeed a shining star in our High Vista community. She brought enormous enthusiasm to yoga, and a delightful intellect and insight to book club. She will be greatly missed.

  11. Loved her English class and enjoyed her smiles. She helped me love to read and also gave Shakespeare an interesting twist.
She will be missed and my prayers go to you all during this time.

  12. My condolences to all the family. Ms. Walters was one of my favorite teachers–about English lit & about life.

  13. Mrs Pat made English class fun! She was always kind and took the time to make me feel comfortable. She knew my family and kept me on my toes. The entire Clements family will miss her.

  14. She believed in me when no one else would. She was an encourager to those who had lost their way. She could see things in people that many would have written off and those who were just going through the rebellion stage of life. Thank God for people like Ms. Pat!

  15. Everyone should be fortunate enough to have a teacher like Pat Walters and my senior English class was one of her first classes after coming to Madisonville. She and John were great friends and role models as well as being teachers of how to live a good life. Her encouragement led to my college scholarship and then medical school and she and John remained friends and mentors. My condolences to Lisa, Matt and Sue and her memory will live on in the many lives she touched in Kentucky and North Carolina.

  16. We were lucky to know Pat during her time in High Vista. She made a friend wherever she went and her big smile and warm friendship was a joy to all. In reading all the wonderful comments by her former students you realize how much influence a teacher can have on a child’s life . . .and that she did. Life well lived Pat! RIP, With love, Phil and Linda Thomas

  17. Loved Mrs. Walters. I have many fond memories of her from being in her class as well as around the school. Condolences to the family

  18. Pat was a lovely and talented lady. As a neighbor, she had a talent for making bread which she shared with those around her…her specialty was sourdough bread, and it was a delight to receive a fresh-baked loaf. We’ll miss her so very much. Our love and prayers to her family whom we got to know personally and through pictures.
