“I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is while you’re in the World” – “Your Song” by Elton John and Bernie Taupin

You remain in the hearts of loved ones. Pat left Earth on Monday, August 5th, 2024. She is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) of 67 years, their son Michael Wilson, their daughter Margie Hoell and her husband Doug, all of Fletcher.

Pat was the eldest of five children, born March 12, 1937 to Roselle and Jacob Swygert of Columbia, SC. She treasured her siblings Leah, Joan, Gene and Lucy. Her two younger sisters, Lucy Covington and Joan Monts preceded her in death.

At age 11, Pat began residential schooling at John de la Howe in McCormick, SC. Although bittersweet, she flourished, relocating to Chimney Rock her sophomore summer for a job. The Host family appreciated her joy and ethics, asking her to remain. Continuing her schooling at Lake Lure High School, she played basketball, was May Day Queen, and made lifelong friendships. She also met her life partner, Bob, and his family became her extended family. She loved her mountain sister, Yvonne Wilson Eisenberg.

She enjoyed reading, watching sports, playing solitaire, listening to gospel music, attending events and an occasional trip to Cherokee. She followed college basketball and cheering on NC State, loved hummingbirds and all things purple. Seldom tardy, arriving early at any venue, always sitting up front, except on Sunday morning where she and Bob perched on the back pew.

Pat was a woman of faith, had a quick smile and genuinely cared about others. She was a devoted friend, sending cards for all occasions, often sharing her scrumptious pound cakes. She was full of compassion, perseverance, humility, generosity, and love. Dear One, you will be missed.

The family appreciates the commitment and love given by Nurse, Rachel Hall, and CNAs Michelle Dill, Brenda Jordan and Catlyn Carland. We also wish to express sincere gratitude to individuals for their acts of kindness during Pat’s decline.

A Celebration of Pat’s Life will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Emma’s Grove Baptist Church in Fletcher, of which she was a longtime member. Her family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 10:30 AM until 11:45 AM. A private family burial will follow the service.

In remembrance of Pat, please consider a charitable contribution to: John de la Howe School Alumni Association c/o Tammy Hill, 2727 Greenwood Highway, Bradley, SC 29819.
