Paul J. McElreath, 103, of Pumpkin St., Leicester, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at Grace Healthcare Center. A native of Madison Co., he was a son of the late John Robert and Mary Lou King McElreath. Mr. McElreath was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during WWII. He retired as a cabinet maker. He was also a member of Newfound Baptist Church. Mr. McElreath is survived by 17 nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Phillips and the Rev. Enoch Ball, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Union Baptist Church Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the Buncombe Co. Veteran's Council. His family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and at other times at 23 Cabelle Place, Asheville.

  1. I was fortunate to meet Paul while volunteering for Meals on Wheels and continued to visit him at his nursing home. Paul was a remarkable man, interested in others, full of fascinating stories, gracious and, until the end, always with a smile on his face. I’ll miss him.
