Paul Ray, 93, of Asheville, died Thursday, August 5, 2021, at the Laurels of Summit Ridge. A native of Yancey County he was the son of the late John Ray and Cora Fox Ray. He was preceded in his death by his loving wife Doris Mae Ray. Also preceded in death by nine siblings; Roy, Georgia, Frank, Alice, James, Arthur, Everette, John Carl, and Verna.

After High School he joined the Merchant Marines and later served two tours of active duty in the United States Navy (1947–1952). Upon discharge from the Navy, he joined the Naval Reserves and served until his retirement. He retired from the VA Medical Center after 30 years of service from the Mail Room.

He is survived by many loving family members.

Funeral Services with Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 11:00 am at East Asheville United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Rev. Phillip Hurst will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am prior to the service. Masks will be required in the church. Interment will follow at Skyview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to the Disabled American Veterans online at www.dav.org.

  6. We’ll miss you Uncle Paul. You were always one of the fun uncles, and one of the most caring. I’ll never forget the way you and Aunt ‘Fuzzy’ helped take care of mother when she had cancer. That was always appreciated. Tell Aunt Fuzzy hello for us, and enjoy your grand vacation. We love you.
