Phillip Michael Shook, 62, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Asheville, NC, after an 8-month battle with cancer.

Born on March 6, 1962, at Memorial Mission Hospital, Phil was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was called home after his beloved wife, Angela Sharon Shook (1965-2022); their dearest dog, Piper; his parents, Ralph Hare and Jeanette Shook; and his grandparents, Dewitt and Lillian Shook. Phil is survived by his children, Nikki Clay and Clinten Shook; his stepdaughter, Karol-Anne Sherlin; as well as his grandchildren, Chloe Clay and Kaylee Shook. His legacy of perseverance and devotion will live on through them and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A dedicated and hardworking individual from an early age, Phil began working at Huntley Construction as a teenager for over three decades, where he honed his skills before embarking on his entrepreneurial endeavors through his own company, Shook’s Backhoe. He contributed another decade of work to Consolidated Properties later in life and had recently been working towards renewing his CDL’s for work.

In his leisure time, Phil found happiness in fishing and riding motorcycles – his Harley Davidson Softail being a particular favorite. He also shared a special bond with his dogs, Izzy and Willow, who brought him tremendous comfort and joy throughout the years.

Phil was known for his unwavering work ethic and headstrong spirit, but Phil also had a tender heart that shone through in his love for his family and friends. His memory will be lovingly carried forward by those whose lives he touched.

A public gathering for loved ones will take place on Friday, February 7, at 1:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, West Asheville. The graveside service will follow at Green Hills Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Haywood Hospice & Palliative Care, 13 Haywood Office Park Suite 107, Waynesville, NC, 28785.
