Phyllis Ann Rutherford, 87, who went by the name of Summie Lea until age 17, of Manvel, Texas passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014 in Utopia, Texas. Phyllis was born February 21, 1926, in Waynesville, NC. She owned and ran a Family Care Home for the elderly in Loch Sheldrake, New York for many years. She served as a a nurse's aide in the United States Army during World War II at the age of 17. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Rutherford; parents, Summie and Macie Patterson; sons, Paul Rutherford; and Gary Burnette, Daughter, Teresa Burnette, Granddaughter, Amanda Bell, foster parents , Alvin and Ollie Mae Ford, sisters, Peggy (Vivian) Caldwell Summey, Faustina Caldwell Johnson, Willie Mae Milender Mills; brother, Joseph Millender. Foster brothers Jim and Bill Ford. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Salser and husband Robert, Sherry Bell; sons, Edward M. Rutherford, Jr., Ted Spidle, Martin Rutherford and Edward B. Rutherford; brother, Donald Milner; foster sister Aleene Ford Hall and husband EL, along with 13 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, numerous other relatives and friends. A graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Cemetery.
