Ray Monroe Whitaker, 74, of Fletcher, died Friday, September 27, 2013 at Universal Healthcare Center.
A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Eulet and Cora Wilson Whitaker. Ray was also preceded in death by his wife, Dortha Louise Whitaker, who died in 2011, as well as two brothers, Hilliard A. Whitaker and William R. Whitaker.
Ray was a United States Army Veteran.
He is survived by one son, Monroe Whitaker, of Fletcher; one step-son, Marshall Gasperson and his wife, Judy, of Boone, NC; one step-daughter, Pamela Gasperson of Raleigh; one granddaughter, Emily Ray Haas; three sisters, Joan Sales of Fletcher, Nelavee Green of Fletcher and Mildred Lewis of Connelly Springs, NC and two brothers, Frank and Royce Whitaker, both of Fletcher.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a memorial contribution to Fletcher First Baptist Church Building Fund, 5 Cane Creek Road, Fletcher, NC 28732.

Dear family, please know how much Ray meant to so many of us. He was one of the kindest and most humble of men I have known and he will be missed so very much by all of those that he helped to take care of. He was indeed a great neighbor and one of a kind. Our love and prayers to all of you.
