Retha Christine Simmons Bowman, 99, of the Laurels of Summit Ridge, Asheville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Mission Hospitals. A native of Taylorsville, NC, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Carter and Jane Shook Simmons. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ransom E. Bowman; two sons, Bill and Harold Bowman and a great-great-grandson, Jared Surrett. She was the oldest member of Corinth Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Randall of Asheville and Janet Cartwright of Leicester; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren and sixteen great-great-grandchildren. Mom Bowman considered all the children and in-laws as her children. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Joel Burton, C.J. Duvall and Charles Surrett officiating. Burial will follow at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery with Robin Bowman, Dick Bowman, Kim Bowman, David Cartwright, Eric Cartwright, Keith Sellers, Justin Wade, Heath Gillespie, Van Duncan and Joe Lamir serving as pallbearers. Her family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm Sunday prior to the service and request that memorials be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 29119, Phoenix, AZ 85038-9119.
