Reverend Andrew Johnson Peters, 89, of Arden, NC, died Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at the Oaks at Sweeten Creek. A native of Ashland, KY, he was a son of the late Rev. C.H. Peters and Judia Ann Lafferty Peters. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Clay Peters, who died in 2001. Rev. Peters was a 1940 graduate of Alice Lloyd College in Pippapass, KY, a 1947 graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, KY and a 1950 graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He became a member of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1947, was ordained a deacon in 1949 and was ordained an elder in 1950. Rev. Peters first accepted the call from God to be a minister in 1938. As a minister of the United Methodist Church, he served the following appointments: Pactolus Circuit, Grayson, KY, 1940-45; Mt. Zion Circuit, Winchester, KY, 1945-47; Kincaid Memorial, Griffin, GA, 1947-51; Maple Ave, Marietta, GA, 1951-55; Julia A. Porter Memorial, Portersdale, GA, 1955-58; Trinity, Rome, GA, 1958-62; First Methodist Church, Fairburn, GA, 1962-65; First United Methodist, Manchester, GA, 1965-66; Columbia Dr, Decatur, GA, 1966-69; Brookhaven, Atlanta, GA, 1969-73; Martha Brown, Atlanta, GA, 1973-85. He retired in 1985. He was the recipient of various scholarships and honors including scholarships at Alice Lloyd College, Kentucky Wesleyan College and Emory University. He was selected as “Who’s Who among students of American Universities and Colleges at Ken-tucky Wesleyan for the 1946-47 academic year. He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Parry and her husband Louis of St. Simon’s Island, GA; one granddaughter, Michele Bryan Murphy and her husband, Michael, of Asheville, NC; one step-granddaughter, Tiffany Parry Kelly and her husband, Stephen of Campbell Hall, NY; two great-granddaughters, Cassidy Fay and Kate Murphy and three step-great-grandsons, Will, Aidan and Charlie Kelly. A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Tucker First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Bolt Cemetery in Ashland, KY. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.
