The Rev. Mason Wilson, Jr., 89, died peacefully at home Sunday morning. Mason was born on August 31st, 1924 in Kansas City, MO but grew up in Wichita Falls, TX. He was the son of the late Mason and Eula Bullock Wilson. He attended Texas A&M for two years, and then served in the U.S. Army. After the war, he attended the University of Texas and graduated with a BA in 1948. He received his Bachelor of Divinity from the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, MA, in 1951. He was ordained a deacon and then priest in the Diocese of Massachusetts of the Episcopal Church. A focus of Mason's ministry was ecumenical relations. He served at the Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole, MA for 10 years, 1951-1961. While at Church of the Messiah, he married Barbara Prue Sherrill on January 2, 1960. Mason was called to St. Andrews Church in Framingham, MA in 1961 and served as rector there until June of 1992. Mason and Prue then moved to Asheville and have been active members of the community for the last 21 years. Mason served as one of the adjunct clergy at the Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore. He was an Associate Member of the Iona Community in Scotland and an active supporter and participant of St. George's College in Jerusalem. Mason was a member of the Asheville Civitan Club and the Democratic Men's Club. He is survived by his wife Prue and their two sons, Mason Wilson III and wife Cathy of West Chester, PA; Henry K.S. Wilson and his wife Lynne of Darien, CT, and 8 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Cathedral of All Souls at 3:00 pm, Sunday, September 29th conducted by the Very Reverend Todd M. Donatelli and the Rev. Canon Thomas Murphy. Mason will be buried at a private ceremony in Woods Hole, MA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cathedral of All Souls, 9 Swan Street, Asheville, NC 28803.

  5. Mason was one of those rare people who know a great deal but never try to take over conversations or continually cling to their own point of view. He was a delight to talk to and brightened up every political meeting I attended when he was present.

  10. It seems so many years ago when I first met Mason and his work within the Town on the Human Relations Commission, and his help in establishing the Framingham Area Interfaith Laity Council. A wonderful spiritual leader and a kind human being. He was missed when he left our community. Our prayers are with the family.
