Richard C. Penland, 93, of Spaulding Dr., Candler, died on Monday, August 2, 2010, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center. A native of Buncombe Co., Mr. Penland was a son of the late Jud and Mattie Penland. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Ray, Joe and Ernest Penland. Mr. Penland had retired from American Enka. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII. Mr. Penland is survived by his wife, Marilee Keener Penland; step-sons, Ken, Russell, and James Jones; sister, Hazel Ivey, of Elizabeth City, NC; and special little boy, Coon Rod. A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Revs. Larry Collins and Richard Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice, P.O.   3. I am the daughter of Nellie Penland Wheeler and she was Richard’s sister. She also preceeded him in death. This was omitted from the obituary and I want everyone to know this. I dearly loved my Uncle and I am so sad he is gone. I will miss him very much.

  11. I extend my apologies to all my family for not being able to attend Uncle Richard’s funeral. I have a medical issue that prevents me from being there. Uncle Richard knew I could not come, and that is a comfort to me. My love is with all the family. God Bless

  14. We are so sorry about not attending the funeral, because of work and other constraints. We were able to visit with UNCLE this passed winter and it was a good visit. I remember how good he was to me as a young child growing up and will remember him with lots of love.

  15. Dear Aunt Marilee even though it has been 2 months since Uncle Richard’s going home to be with the Lord I still think about him all the time. You were a blessing that came into his life and he loved you very much. He was the best UNCLE anyone could ever have and I loved him with all of my heart but thank God I have the option of going to meet him someday and that I will do. I LOVE YOU AUNT MARILEE!
