Richard Thomas Sluder, 92, passed away Friday, July 14, 2023 at Mission Hospital.

Mr. Sluder was born in Buncombe County to the late Cariel Oscar Sluder and Icie Fore Sluder. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Richard retired from BASF formerly American Enka. He was a longtime member of Biltmore Church. He was a founding member of the Western Carolina Beagle Club and had raised and competed in field trials with his beagles since his 20’s. He was also an active member of the Valley Springs Lions Club. He enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of over 74 years, June Higdon Sluder; a daughter, Shirley Cunliffe (Hillis); a son, Richard (Rick) Sluder, Jr.; five grandchildren, Mike Cunliffe (Sara), Amy Smith (Will), Cody Sluder, Jamie Sluder and Summer Sluder (Tatum) and three great grandchildren, Ben Smith, Jack Smith and Ulysses Sluder.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home with Pastor Sam McLamb officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville.

Flowers are appreciated or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice in Richard’s honor.
