Robert A. Kimbrough, a resident of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, died May 12, 2024.
Gratitude is expressed for the outstanding care which he received at the Deerfield Skilled Care Facility.
Bob was born November 2, 1933 in Sarasota, FL. After graduation from Davidson College, he served with the US Army in Korea. Bob then married Emilie, his wife for 66 years, and enrolled in the law school at the University Of Florida. Upon graduation, he returned to Sarasota and practiced law there for 56 years. Though he and his wife had spent a lot of time in North Carolina prior to moving permanently to Asheville, his activities were mostly located in Sarasota.
Bob served in leadership positions at the First Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, Peace River Presbytery, The Ringling College Of Art And Design. The Sarasota Orchestra, The Salvation Army, The Kiwanis Club and several other charitable organizations. He received several awards for outstanding service in the areas of the community, higher education and the arts.
He also enjoyed fishing and boats, piloting small planes, golf and classical music activities.
Bob was the only child of the late Verman and Edith Kimbrough. He is survived by his wife, Emilie and their two sons, James and Robert, Jr. Bob also enjoyed the relationship with Emilie’s family who live in the Asheville area, including her sister, Elizabeth Lamb, who resides at Deerfield and her brother, Fred Hudson, who was Bob’s roommate at Davison College, and now lives with his wife Heather in Weaverville. Bob is also survived by nine nieces and nephews, whom he had a fond relationship with.
A private service for the family will be held at a later date and Groce Funeral Home’s Lake Julian team is assisting the family.
I’m so sorry to learn of Mr. Kimbrough’s passing. He was a lovely man. I knew him when I lived in Sarasota as he was the lawyer for our neighborhood, Rollins Pond; after working with him on amending the neighborhood covenants, he became my personal lawyer. I was involved with several historical and preservation groups in Sarasota County so he and I would see each other at various events, such as the dedication of the Avondale Neighborhood Historical Marker. My condolences to his family.
