Robert A. Owenby, age 75, died on Wednesday, October 12, 2011.
Mr. Owenby was born on February 2, 1936 in Weaverville, NC and was the son of the late Alvin Buster Owenby and Margie Owenby Edwards. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Mehaffey Owenby and daughter, Darlene Owenby Robichaud. He is survived by his son-in-law, Paul Andrew Robichaud, grandsons Alex Andrew Robichaud and Bryan Paul Robichaud of Albemarle, NC. Also surviving are brothers Richard Owenby of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Woody Owenby and wife Audrey of Leicester, NC.
Mr. Owenby served his country honorably for eight years in the US Marine Corps and was honored for outstanding service and loyalty to the USA. He was an honorary member of the Elk's BPO 608, serving on many charitable events, including the annual Bob Owenby Classic Golf Tournament, Children's Day Picnic, and Children's Christmas Shoe Party. He was President of Harry's Body and Fender Services, Inc. until his retirement in 1996. He was a faithful member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church and cherished his church family. One of his greatest pleasures was being a proud cheering Granddad at his grandsons ball games.
A Celebration of Life for Mr. Owenby will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Veranita Alrod and the Rev. Fred A. Carpenter officiating. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park following the service.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 am to 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, prior to the service.

I was a very good friend of the Owenby family for many, many years. We enjoyed many years of good memories and he will be missed.
He’s in a place of glory, no more hurt and worry.God bless the families left behind because it is we that hurt and miss our loved one. You are in my prayers.
