Robert Alexander Crowell, 72, of Asheville, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at his home.

                                         
A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Roy Churchwell and Vivian Vaughan Crowell and was a dairy farmer in Hominy Valley his entire life.  He was a graduate of Sand Hill High School and served in the US Navy during WW II. He was an active member of Acton United Methodist Church.


Mr. Crowell was involved in many agricultural organizations, including the Farm Bureau, the WNC
Dairy Commission, Southern States Cooperative, and Carolina-Virginia Milk Producers Association.  In 1988, he was chosen WNC Dairy Farmer of the Year and in 1997, he received the
Marvin E. Senger Distinguished Dairy Farmer Award from NC State University.


Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Lucy Nell Woodbery Crowell; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Ball of New Castle, NH and Anne
and Ivan Banks of Petroleum, WV; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Deborah Crowell of Asheville and Alan and Lorrie Crowell of Salvisa, KY; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren;  two sisters, Virginia Wilson of Pinehurst, NC and Betty Lou Crowder of Hodges, SC; and a brother, Roy C. (Bud) Crowell of
Candler.


Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Wednesday at Acton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul
Hacklander officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.


Pallbearers will be James Crowell, Howard Fender, Charlie Fender, Bruce Fender, Mitchell Jarvis,
Doug Wright, Joe Edmonds, Bob Hoenigman, and Dennis Sebring.


His family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8:30 pm Tuesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
