Captain Robert Thomas Howell, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Valor Hospice in Asheville, NC.
Bob was born on November 1, 1943, to the late Robert Everett Howell and Janie Mae Franklin Howell, in Bedford County, VA. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Michael Howell, of Roanoke, VA. He attended Huddleston Elementary, Hargrave Military Academy, and Altavista High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force at the age of 17. He worked on the flight line at Eglin AFB as a mechanic. He would drive on the weekends to attend flight school where he would eventually receive his pilot’s certificate.
Bob flew for Pasquale Food Company (Birmingham, AL), Weiner King (Charlotte, NC), and Tennessee Airways (Chattanooga, TN) before flying for Atlantic Southeast Airlines, which was a Delta Connection. He was certified by the FAA as a flight examiner, and he was proud of certifying thousands of pilots during his career. He loved flying and anything to do with aviation.
Bob is survived by his children, Diana Kay Alvis, of Bedford County, VA, Robert Thomas Howell, II, (Sarita) of Yorktown, VA, Rachel Leah Howell, of Macon, GA, and Adam Christopher Howell, of Marietta, GA; his sister, Rebecca Howell, of Floyd, VA; as well as his grandsons, Denver Alvis (Diana’s son) and Jackson Cash Howell (Rachel’s son).
Bob led a life full of adventure. He was a jokester, and he loved making people smile. He loved Harley Davidson motorcycles, too. Most importantly, he loved the Lord. He attended church services and Bible studies regularly. He loved to help people, and in his later life, often looked for ways to serve others. He actively sought to be an expression of the love of Christ. He was still making friends in the hospital and at Valor Hospice. This is the legacy that will be remembered.
Funeral service arrangements will be announced in the near future.

Thank you!
I’m sad to hear that Bob has passed. Bob became a part of our church family at Zion Interdenominational Church in Cleveland GA several years ago. Bob fit in right from the start. His love for God was evident. He was always quick to help clean up after meals, he made it a point to speak to everyone every Sunday service and Wednesday service Bob was a friend to everyone. We could count on Bob during Christmas plays and helping with VBS to work wherever he was needed….. the high school class always loved his sense of humor and his passion for Jesus.
Thank you, he loved serving at the church!
Was like a brother to me we always called each other brother I will truly miss him but i know where he is now God needed another angel
Praying for you all, now and in the days ahead.
Thank you, Melanie
Love you, Rachel.
Blessings and prayers to Bob’s family from a colleague at Atlantic Southeast Airlines!
Tailwinds and fair skies from a brother pilot and fellow flight instructor! ☘️
He loved every bit of it! ❤️
I have great memories of flying with Bob and joking around with him in the crew lounge at ASA. He was my instructor when I was getting my Bandit type. A very good instructor, and we enjoyed our time when we’re not training also. Such a funny guy! Sad to hear of his passing but glad to hear he was very spiritual and in good hands in his last days.
I would love to hear more!
Bob you were a light in the park! We will miss you here! We know you’re dancing with our Lord!

Always a gentleman. He is missed by us all. One night we did a gospel karaoke and afterwards he asked if he sang ok. It was beautiful Bob. Keep singing!
Bob we will miss your smile. We know you are in a better place.
I’m sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I’ll be forever grateful for his mentoring and advice when I was an aspiring pilot. He administered several of my flight exams and later the exams of my students. He was instrumental in the success of my career and I regret that we lost touch over the years. I never met a pilot who didn’t enjoy Bob’s company. Truly a friend to all who knew him.
After reading all the accolades in the obit and messages on here. I’m appreantly reading about the wrong Bobby Howell. The one I knew was nothing like what’s depictednotno here.
