Arden - Robert Carol Thompson, 65, of 21 Morgan Blvd., died Tuesday, August 5, 2003 in the V.A. Medical Center. A native of Madisonville, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Milton H. and Mary Helen Howard Thompson. He was a retired US Navy veteran and an employee of the V.A. Medical Center. Mr. Thompson was a combat decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving the Bronze Star among many other awards and decorations. He was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church and of the Fleet Reserve. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Effler Thompson, a native of Marion; daughter, Lisa Ann Thompson Owensby of Fletcher; two sons, Bobby Joe Thompson of the home, Michael Gary Thompson, and his wife Tracy, of Fletcher; a sister, Elizabeth Faulk of Stafford, VA; three brothers, Hubert Thompson, Donald Thompson and Ralph Thompson, all of Brunswick, GA; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Friday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain conducted by the Rev. Roy Rigdon. Military rites will be conducted by the US Naval Reserve and the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. Mr. Thompson’s family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 pm Thursday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.

  3. Betty, I am very sorry to hear about Bob. Our sympathy is extended to you and the children. I know your sorry, I have been there. You will be in mine and JW’s thoughts and prayers during this time. I will contact you sometime next week.

    Remember when God closes a door, He opens a window. This has been a comfort to me for a long time.
