Robert Edward “Ed” Davis, 83, of 69 Laurel Loop Rd., Asheville, passed away Tuesday August 15, 2006 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late William J. and Kate Davis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WWII. He was a self-employed carpenter most of his life. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Kate Davis. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Elva Eugenia “Ginger” Presnell Davis; three sons, Johnny Davis of Asheville, Charles Davis and wife Lois of Fairview and Rick Davis of Asheville; four daughters, Rebecca Brigman and husband Ronald of Arden, Annette Johnson and husband Ken of Hendersonville, and Rhonda Kirkland and husband Sonny of Hendersonville, and Joyce Smith and husband Willie of Asheville; two sisters, Lavada Gibson and Jean Whitted; one brother, Herman Davis; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Donnie Walker officiating. Interment will follow at the cemetery. Buncombe County Veterans Council will conduct military graveside rites. No formal visitation is scheduled at this time. Memorials may be made to Hearts with Hands, 951 Sand Hill Road, Asheville, NC, 28806. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting with arrangements.
