Robert Harold Shannon, died Monday, May 29, 2017, Memorial Day, at his residence.
A native of Enid, OK, Robert was the son of the late John R. and Dorothy Baker Shannon. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Dorothy Hunt.
Mr. Shannon proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of The University of Nebraska, Omaha. He retired as an Administrations Officer from the Veterans Administration and was a member of DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
A Master Tailor, he was primary tailor for The Man Store in downtown Asheville and more recently was a self-employed tailor.
Socially, Mr. Shannon was a member of Masonic Lodge #682, in Asheville, the Shriners, and the Euclid Lodge #2 in Topeka, KS, where he also served as Potentate; the Elks Club, the Carltons Club, and the Erwin Optimist Club in Asheville. Professionally, he served as the Golden Care Chairman at St. Joseph's Hospital, aided in the urban renewal project in Topeka, and even played professional baseball in the Negro Baseball League, also in Topeka.
He and Mrs. Shannon were former members of St. James A.M.E. Church, Asheville, and currently are members of Biltmore Church.
Mr. Shannon is survived by his wife, Georgia M. Patterson Shannon; daughters, Nadia Arbelo-Brownson and husband Jamil, Angela R. Benjamin and husband Tony, and Marylin Russell; sons, Alford J. Stubbs and Paul Shannon; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sisters- and brother-in-law, Clara Shearon (Robert), Ruby Carson, Bobbie Dudley and Ethel Peterson, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service for Mr. Shannon, with military honors and Masonic rites, will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.

Shannon was our brother-in-law and we enjoyed many years of family fun and trips! He was a fun loving man with a big heart! He will be missed by all who loved and cherished him. We look forward to seeing him again when God comes for us all. We extend our love and faith to his family in their time of grief!

Sister Georgia, so sorry to hear about the passing of my brother-in-law Shannon. He was a joy to be around. He’s hearty laugh and smile was so infectious when you were around him. He’ll truely be missed. RIP Shannon!
