Robert LeRoy Smit

Mills River – Robert LeRoy Smit, 65, died Sunday, May 7, 2006 in an Asheville hospital. A native of Battle Creek, Michigan, he was the son of Esther R. Isbell of Sun City, Arizona and of the late Russell Mercer. Robert was a graduate of Battle Creek High School and served with the U.S. Navy from 1959 until 1963. He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church and a retired switching system technician with Ameritec. He and his wife Carla retired to North Carolina in 1995. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Carla Rosenow Smit; three sons, Joe Smit of Godley, Illinois, Tim Smit and Jason Smit of Battle Creek; two grandsons, Adam Smit of Godley and Erich Smit of Battle Creek and aunt, Jane Clark of Sierra Vista, Arizona. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 12th at Calvary Episcopal Church conducted by the Rev. Victor C. Mansfield.
