Robert Osborne Cain, 88, of Asheville passed away June 30, 2011.
Bob Cain was born January 12, 1923, in Miami, Florida. His years of growing up in what was then Florida Everglades provided a lifetime of tales about gators, snakes, and panthers. It was at this time that he first developed a passion for fishing and the outdoors that would last a lifetime.
After graduating from Fort Lauderdale High School, where he met his future wife, Margot Blessing, he went to the University of Florida. His deep devotion to his country led him to join the Marine Corps in World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theatre, including Iwo Jima. He later joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea. His service as a career military officer spanned two and a half decades.
Bob Cain lived in many places both in the United States and abroad. His love of his family, his country and the outdoors figured prominently in his life. An avid sports fan, he followed the Atlanta Braves to the end. He grew the best tomatoes and did his part to feed the birds of Western North Carolina.
Mr. Cain is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margot Blessing Cain; daughters, Katherine (Harry) Maney, Mary (Christopher) Fertig, Elizabeth (Stephen) Smith, Anne Hutchins, and Sarah Cain; grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth (Patrick) Craig, Andrew Kias, Sarah (Bin) Wang, Katherine Fertig, Bobby Fertig, Margaret Fertig, Mary Beth Fertig, Anne Fertig, Stephen Smith, Mary Frances Smith, Christopher Smith and Emily Hutchins; sister-in law, Edith Matthews; five great grandchildren, three nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Christine Matthews and his brothers, Charlie Matthews and Harry Matthews.
A private church service for family and church family will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2011, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Chunns Cove Road, Asheville. Burial with full military honors will be Monday, July 4th, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Churchyard 328 Queen Street, Pendleton, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to St. Lukes, 219 Chunns Cove, Asheville, N.C. or the historic churchyard at St. Paul's Church, 193 Old Greenville Highway, Clemson, S.C., 29631 or to a charity of choice.
