Roger D. Bower

Roger D. Bower, 74, of Asheville NC passed away peacefully Thursday, March 7th, 2024 at Pardee Hospital.

Born in Jacksonville, FL he was the husband of Jane Vaughn Bower and the son of the late Montie Bower Reed and Arthur Evenson Bower. In addition to his wife of almost 50 years he is survived by two sons: Austin Evenson Bower and his girlfriend Julie Orbach of Asheville; and Adam James Bower and his wife Chloe of Huntsville, AL; a grandson, Charlie Benjamin Bower and Julie’s son Jon Leo; a sister Susan Bower Kelly and her husband Joe; a brother Kenneth “Tad” Reed and his wife Tami; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Roger was of Methodist faith. He attended Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, SC where he played varsity basketball. He graduated from Gardner Webb University with a degree in business. Roger spent over 35 years in the banking and consulting business. He served as President of the Gainesville/Hall County Chamber of Commerce in Georgia. He retired from HomeTrust Bank in Asheville as Executive Vice President of Retail Banking.

He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed playing golf and attending UNCA basketball games. Through his love of UNCA athletics, Roger served as the head of the UNCA booster club. He was also a pilot and flight instructor.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 16, at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Rev. Neil Cochran officiating. Friends and family will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home from 10 to 11 AM. Burial will be at 3:00 PM following the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the respective athletic departments at UNCA or Gardner Webb.
