Roger Lee Harpe, Jr., 87, of Asheville, NC, entered his eternal home on Friday, October 6, 2023.

Roger was born May 16, 1936, in Eagle Mills Township of Iredell County, NC, to the late Roger Lee Harpe, Sr., and Mary Elizabeth Dare. He was the oldest of three children and is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Cothren, and brother, Henry Harpe.

Roger was married to the late Geraldine Ellen Brown for 47 years and three children were born from this union: daughter, Lee Harpe Davis (Edwin), and sons, Keith Cordell Harpe (Patty), and Steve Randall Harpe (Tamera). He is also survived by six grandchildren: Graig Davis (Vanesa), Marissa Gunn (Allen), Matthew Davis (Kirby), Ashley Fortner (Tyler), Alex Harpe and Brandon Harpe, who lovingly knew him as “Papa,” often shortened to “Pop.” His grandchildren blessed his legacy with seven great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons.

Roger is also survived by his wife of 17 years, Jerlene Harpe. They loved jigsaw puzzles and traveling together. They even visited all 50 states! Roger was fond of her children, Vickie Soesbee (Johnny) and Timothy Bailey (Maria), and granddaughter, Danielle Bailey.

Roger was an executive with Boy Scouts of America for Stokes, Surry and Buncombe Counties. He was an Eagle Scout with bronze, gold and silver palms and was also a recipient of the Order of the Arrow. He was owner of The Carpet Barn and Mr. Handyman in Asheville. He was also a long-time member of Emma Fellowship Church.

Roger’s legacy is marked by love, compassion and his generosity that remains an inspiration to his family and friends. His memory will forever live on in their hearts.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Emma Fellowship Church, 55 Adams Hill Road, Asheville. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Entombment will then take place at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

  2. I’m so sorry for your loss. The memories I have of your Dad are too many to mention. But I know our youth group, which he was in charge of, made a difference in my life that was life changing! I will always feel blessed and grateful to him and all the adults involved.

  4. Jerlene and all of Roger’s family, When we first moved to Brigadoon, Roger was always such a help and was always so good to me as I was trying to work on the HOA board. From reading his obituary, there was so much that we didn’t know about him. He was a good man. So sorry for your loss. Bill and Melanie

And he would reel me in with a story that had me on the edge of my seat. And then he would deliver the corniest punchline. I will cherish those memories. Hugs and kisses to all of my cousins.   7. What good memories and good leadership we received as youth under Roger. He made a difference in many lives. Prayers to all for comfort and for the sad memories to be replaced by the good ones.

  8. Having worked with and being associated with Roger for many years, this a a sad day. We had not seen much of each other in the last few years. My entire family will miss him. He was a very good friend indeed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

  10. During our years of attending Emma Church Roger was very special to David and me. We share great memories with our Emma “Church family”.
    Roger helped David build a ramp on our home in Southport when he drove the ladies down in the church van for a weekend retreat.

  11. Jack and I are so sorry of the passing of Roger. What a rejoicing in Heaven when he entered the gates. I have so many happy memories or Roger. The memory I remember Roger was very kind and caring and he was one of the kids with his laughter . May God bless each one of you and cherish the memories you have in your heart.
