Roslyn Fay Reed Carney, age 46, passed away on November 16, 2022, at CarePartners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville, NC after a brief battle with influenza and pneumonia.

Roslyn was born on April 5, 1976, on the beautiful Gulf Coast of Florida in Pasco County to Kenneth and Bonnie Reed. She graduated from Hudson High School, Mars Hill College with a BA in Music Education in 1999, and Appalachian State University with a master’s degree in Library Science in 2011. Roslyn taught middle school band and elementary music in Tampa, FL for three years. From there she returned to the beautiful Appalachian Mountains and spent the remaining years of her life as an educator with Madison County Schools, in North Carolina working as a band director, choir director, general music teacher, and most recently as the Library/Media Coordinator at Brush Creek Elementary School.

Roslyn was preceded in death by her mom, Bonnie Reed. Roslyn is survived by her husband of 23 years J.P., son Reed, father Kenneth Reed, and brother Kenneth Reed Jr. (Michelle). Roslyn was a devoted mother to Reed. Roslyn enjoyed spending every waking moment with Reed. Whether it was cooking in the kitchen, traveling, camping, bike riding, kayaking, at the 4-H club, cheering him on at soccer games, watching him grow at school, and creating things together with him. She will always be in our hearts.

About Roslyn’s lifetime passion of teaching. In Tampa, Florida she taught band at Van Buren Middle School, elementary music at Philip Shore Elementary, and Seminole Presbyterian School. In Madison County, NC Roslyn started teaching general music at Brush Creek, Hot Springs, and Laurel Elementary Schools. From here she moved to Madison Middle School as the band and choir director. In 2011, Roslyn received her master’s degree in library and Information Science from Appalachian State University and became the Library/Media specialist at Brush Creek Elementary where she continued to work for the rest of her life. Roslyn was truly blessed to be surrounded by wonderful peers, supervisors, and incredible students. Roslyn loved her school and all of her students. She always remained positive, supportive, and found a way to bring out the best in everyone. Her smile would light up every room she entered.

In addition to her non-stop work for Madison County Schools, Roslyn was deeply committed to her community and church Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville, NC. Roslyn was currently a member of the Asheville Community Band, the Brevard Community Band, and a volunteer with the Blue Ridge Orchestra. She was a past member of the Masonic Band of St. Petersburg, FL, the Suncoast Symphony Orchestra of Clearwater, FL, the Sunshine Brass Band of Tampa, FL, the South Pasadena Community Band of South Pasadena FL, and The Land of Sky Symphonic Band of Asheville, NC. Music truly was an essential part of her amazing life.

Please join Roslyn’s family and the Madison County School family on Monday, December 12, 2022, at 6:30 in the gymnasium at Madison High School 5740 US-25, Marshall, NC 28753 as we celebrate her wonderful life. Please wear something yellow if you can. It was her favorite color, and that bright color also reflects the bright light she was to all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers please do something for your local school and community by getting involved in any way you can. Keep her passions of love, peace, forgiveness, compassion, music, community, education, and family alive in all you do. We hope you will join us on December 12.
