Sincere condolences to all the family. I have fond memories of Rubena from early childhood, when my parents took us small sons to visit Uncle Joe Childers and Aunt Connie at their hillside home in Canton. (My father Roy was Joseph’s much younger brother.) Our older girl cousins, including Rubena, made us rather shy boys feel very welcome with their bright, warm spirits. I remember being especially fascinated by the little ‘hen and chicks’ sempervivum plants they showed us growing magically out of the side of clay pots beside the steps up to the house. Now, these sixty some years later, we have hen and chicks growing out of the stone wall beside our driveway.
Later, Rubena helped organize the Childers family reunions in the 1980’s, bringing descendants of Thomas Clingman Childers, Jr, from near and far.
In my father’s last year, 1996, Rubena, along with cousin Mary Jo, visited my father when he was hospitalized in Asheville. All those years later, she still radiated the warmth and joy I remembered from early childhood and that visit brightened my father’s day quite visibly.
Rest in peace, dear Rubena.
