Ruby Harvey Blankenship

ruby blankenship
Ruby Harvey Blankenship, 92, entered into her eternal home Monday, April 22, 2013, from her residence. A native of Buncombe Co., she was one of six children born to Harry and Bessie Harvey, who preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her family, which included three sisters, Myrtle LaTour, Ruth Edmonds (twin sister), June Russell, and two brothers Harry Jr. and Charles Harvey. "Miss Ruby", as she was lovingly known to many, was a long time member of Bent Creek Baptist Church, where she cared for many of the children who stayed in the church nursery until she was no longer able to do so. She loved her church, church family, and their children. She did work outside the home; her last employment being at the Flat Iron Building operating one of the last manually run elevators in Asheville. Ruby is survived by her four children, Gloria Warren, Howard Jr., Judy Tweed, and Freida Blankenship; four grandchildren Joelle Warren, Sammie Tweed, Chris and Todd Shotwell; four great-grandchildren Chase and Hannah Sample and Kayden and Kason Shotwell; as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tommy Bridges officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the servivce. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Brother Wolfe Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, PO Box 8195, 31 Glendale Ave., Asheville, NC 28803.

  4. Nanny,

I love you. I will miss you and cherish so many wonderful memories of you and me. You were a huge part of my childhood and as a grandmother you were great, as my Nanny you were awesome. I have nothing but happy memories with you. I remember New Year’s celebrations, beach trips, and I can still hear your voice yelling ‘go Chris’ or ‘go Todd’ during all of our games. You were always happy and I cannot ever remember a time when you were not smiling. That is how I will always remember you: smiling and that is what I know you are doing now in Heaven: smiling. I love you.

My condolences go out Ruby’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and everyone else who experienced her love and compassion. An angel has gone to heaven.

    Love the Shotwell Family,
