Rudolph Gay, 77 of Primrose Drive, Hendersonville, died Tuesday, May 26, 1999 at the Hospice Solace Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.


A native of Wendell, NC, he was the son of the late Silas & Eliza Morris Gay.

He attended St. John In The Wilderness Episcopal Church, and was owner of a number of tire businesses in the Asheville area including Clingman Avenue, Riverside Drive, among those were Rudy Gay's Tires in Fletcher. He had been active in Friendship Force, and traveled to Ireland and New Zealand, and hosted a New Zealand guest in Hendersonville.  He was a Staff Sergeant with the US Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater, and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was married first to Elise Ponger Gay who died in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Cogan Gay, of Hendersonville; three step children; and two step grandchildren; three brothers; Morris Gay of Wilson, NC; Braxton Gay of Rolesville, NC; and Herbert Gay of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Shirley Gay Wood and her husband Jody of Wendell, NC.  He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, James and Billy Gay.


Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Father John Morton officiating.  Interment will be in Green Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, NC - 28793-2395.
