Ruth Dickenson Flaherty, 92, passed away on December 26, 2024.
A native of Harlan, KY, Ruth was the daughter of Fred and Mary Forrester Dickenson. She was preceded in death by her husband, James William “Bill” Flaherty, and a brother, the Rev. James Dickenson.
Mrs. Flaherty graduated high school in Harlan before attending secretarial school in Bowling Green, KY. There she met her husband, Bill, who graduated from the Bowling Green School of Commerce, now part of Western Kentucky University. They married in 1952 and began their life together in Shelbyville, TN. They moved to Asheville in 1956.
Ruth enjoyed raising her family and participating in community activities. She studied real estate and enjoyed a successful career for 25 years.
Ruth is survived by her sons, James William “Bill” Flaherty, Jr. (Darlene), and Thomas Kevin Flaherty (Amanda); grandchildren Evan Matthew Flaherty, Brooke Flaherty Williams (Michael), and James William “Trey” Flaherty, III: great-granddaughter, Harlow James Williams; and brothers, David Dickenson and John Dickenson.
The family wishes to hold a Celebration of Ruth’s Life on a future date this spring. Inurnment will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, NC.
