Ruth Marie Linder, 86, formerly of Longview Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at Pisgah Manor Nursing Center.
Mrs. Linder was born in LaGrange, GA, and was a long time resident of Buncombe County. She was preceded in death by her parents, John William and Carrie Duke Crockett, her husband, John David Linder, Sr., who died in 1994, a son, John David Linder, Jr., and a sister, Christine Brown. She was retired from the US Government Department of the Interior, and received commendations for her participation as a member of the Manhattan Project team, which developed the first atomic bomb.
She was a longtime member of Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Carl Linder and his wife, Angela, of Asheville and Jimmy Linder of Asheville; five grandchildren, Kaleb Linder, Ariel Linder, Natasha Linder, Stephanie Linder and Steve Penley; a great-grandson, Patrick; and one sister. Mildred Crockett of Greensboro.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Russell officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
