Sally Grant Pietrandrea

sally pietrandrea
Sally Grant Pietrandrea passed on to the next stage of her journey, leaving this life on August 8, 2015 at 9:00 P.M. She found her final peace on earth on her own terms, and passed with a smile on her face. She was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania on November 18th, 1930 to Frederick T. Grant and Sara Rhoads Grant. Raised in a loving household, she developed an early love of knowledge and a compassionate, caring personality that she carried throughout her life. She graduated from Sunbury High School and attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, majoring in Textile Design. She married Louis Pietrandrea O.D. on May 17, 1952 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania and they remained happily married for the rest of her life. This is, in part, because she was the kind of woman who would take golf lessons to appease him (even though she secretly confided she hated the game). An art school teacher, artist, and professional porcelain painter with numerous exhibitions to her credit, Sally brought the spark of creativity and a beautiful aesthetic sensibility to everything she did. She was an activist who stood up for the Amish community, to whom she was very dear. She was also an award-winning chef and cook capable of creating exquisite flavors, and the delicious food she made for her loved ones will be sorely missed. She was an avid reader and a connoisseur of classical music and the fine arts. She and her husband spent fifty wonderful years in Mifflinburg, P.A. They moved to the Mills River area in 2007, where she fell in love with the mountains and continued to enjoy the arts and cultural life she valued, also passing that love on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in what was one of her most important roles. Sally was a member of the Autumn Players, as well as being the invaluable muse for her husband's theatrical pursuits. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and wanted people to remember her with a smile and a laugh – which will not be difficult, as her smile and the twinkle in her eye inspired happiness in all she knew. Formerly a member of St. Mary's Episcopal church of Asheville, she was more recently a member of All Saints Anglican Church in Mills River and her remains will be interred in the garden there. Sally is survived by an extensive brood including her husband of 63 years Louis Pietrandrea, her brother Bill Grant, daughters Christina Pietrandrea and Nancy Scheewe, six loving grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren at various stages of cooling with two more still in the oven. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Elizabeth House Hospice Center, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731. A memorial service will be held for Sally on Saturday, September 5th 2015 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Anglican Church in Mills River, NC. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. Christine, I am deeply saddened to learn your mother made her transition. She was such a wonderful mother and will be missed by many. We know she is with our Lord and that brings some peace. You are in my thoughts in your time of sorrow and grief.
    With love,
    Chris

  2. My condolences to the family. May ‘the God of all comfort’ provide for your family during this difficult time. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4)

  3. Uncle Pete, Chris, Nancy and Family Our family sends our deepest condolences for the loss of our dearest Aunt Sally. Many great memories of all are etched in my mind forever. She was a very special lady who will be greatly missed on this earth. God bless all and my you find pease and comfort in the days to come. Love Bill, Donna, Lindsey, Kristin

  4. Uncle Pete, Chris, Nancy and Families, We are saddened to learn Aunt Sally’s earthly journey has ended but rejoice in knowing she has been called home and is once again reunited with her family and friends who have gone before us! I can only imagine the joy when she was met by her mother, father and sister. What a vibrant and caring aunt who has left a legacy in our family that will never be forgotten. Live, laugh and love always like Sally has exemplified in her daily life. May God keep you in his care during this difficult time and may you find peace in his love.
Much love to you all, Love Todd, Anna, Christopher, Melissa and Steven

  5. What an amazing legacy Sally has left to us all. It was a privilege to know Sally. Pete, Steve & I are better because of you & Sally. Sally exuded the love of life and creativity and together you both reflected that to others.

  6. Sadden to read of the death of your beloved Sally. Although I did not know her personally, I do know the pain that comes with the death of a loved one. Please know that our loving Creator has promised at Revelation 21:4 He will: ‘wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things will have passed away.’ May the sure promise of life again for Ms. Sally bring her family comfort and peace as you await the fulfillment.

  7. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. My heart goes out to your family. Death is something we will never get use to. In fact, God’s Word refers to death as an enemy. (1 Corinthians 15:26) Very soon our loving Heavenly Father, will remove death once and for all ( Rev 21:4) and give us the opportunity to see our loved ones again here on the earth. (Acts 24:15)

  8. Mrs. P, as us children would call her, was a wonderful lady. I as a young child grew up near them in Mifflinburg, PA and we would always go there after school just to say hello, or ask if we could play hide and seek in the bushes/trees, they had the best places to hide! She was always welcoming and we always thought she was the greatest! Dr. P and the rest of the family my heartfelt sympathies and may you find peace in your memories. I am blessed because I got to grow up knowing her! God Bless you all!

  9. Dr. Pete, Christina, Nancy, and family,

So very sorry to hear of your loss. Mrs. Pietrandrea always seemed like such a very special lady to me. I remember staying overnight with Chris (and Nancy) with fond memories. She made us a wonderful Italian dinner with the best meatballs ever! She was a very fun, kind and classy lady, and our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you and your family. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Hold onto those wonderful memories.

    Sincerely,
    Janet and Dennis Reed
