Sally Marie Cutshaw (née Smith), 81, of Asheville, NC, passed away on November 22, 2023 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Sally was born on August 15, 1942, to Donald and Margie Smith in Mobile, AL. After graduating from Murphy High School in Mobile, she went on to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation from Florida State University.
While in college, she met Charles Q. Cutshaw. They soon wed and had three children, Charles Q. Cutshaw, Jr., Michael J. Cutshaw (1970-1987) and Andrea L. Cutshaw.
When Sally had Chuck, she decided to dedicate her life to being a wonderful and caring mother. Sally threw herself into raising her children and was constantly involved in their activities. She was a cub scout leader, attended many sporting events, worked tirelessly and supported them through the many passions and difficulties of their adult lives. Whether that was supporting her husband, Charles, when he had to leave the Army, using her lifelong passion of giving, or supporting Andrea as a single mother by baby-sitting, she made it her mission to improve the lives of her family and others.
Sally was a passionate gardener. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found in her garden, weeding, repotting, and pruning. We will miss her greatly.
Sally was predeceased by her brother Donald L. Smith, Jr., her sister, Margie Cagle and her son, Michael J. Cutshaw. She is survived by Charles Q. Cutshaw, Jr and Andrea L. Cutshaw, and her grandchildren, Kayleigh I. Cutshaw, Brianna M. Kitzhoffer, and Isaiah M. Darity.

Sally was a beautiful soul. She will be truly missed by us and many others. We love you guys.
My aunt Sally was one of the most giving and lovely people I will ever know. I don’t know when she started it, but ever since I can remember when she had to leave or she ended a phone conversation she would always say “I love ya!” And she taught me to answer “and I’m always thinking of ya!” Well, until the day I leave this earth, aunt Sally I will always love you and I will always be thinking of you.
My parents (John and June Newton) knew Sally in Germany in the 70s. My father was in the Army and we lived in the apartment across the hall from them in Darmstadt. My mother and I were just reminiscing of those days. We are sorry to learn of her passing.
