Samuel Ernest Merrell, 63, of Fairview, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the John F. Keever, Jr Solace Center. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Guy and Ruth Nelon Merrell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Hackworth Merrell, who died in 2006. Sam was a US Marine, serving in Vietnam. He was highly decorated Purple Heart recipient. He leaves behind many friends and family who will cherish his memory. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 29, 2011 at Cane Creek Cemetery in Fairview. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.

My father, Charles Huntley, has talked about Sam and the friend that he has been to him over the years very often. I know that dad will miss their talks and visits down memory lane.
