Samuel Ernest Merrell, 63, of Fairview, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the John F. Keever, Jr Solace Center.
A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Guy and Ruth Nelon Merrell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Hackworth Merrell, who died in 2006.
Sam was a US Marine, serving in Vietnam. He was highly decorated Purple Heart recipient. He leaves behind many friends and family who will cherish his memory.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 29, 2011 at Cane Creek Cemetery in Fairview.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.

Seeing Sammys good looking smile brought back so many memories of days gone by.He will be missed and yet welcomed by all who went on ahead. My heart goes out to all his loved ones he has left behind.
I am so sorry to hear about Sammy. I hadn’t learned of his illness. I remember him as a small child and the time he spent with our grandmother and my family. He will be greatly missed.

I remember my cousin Sammy as we were as kids. He certainly grew into a fine gentleman and served our country well. My condolences to his family.

Sam will be dearly missed. He has always had a smile that would light up any room and make your day seem better just for seeing him. My father, Charles Huntley, has talked about Sam and the friend that he has been to him over the years very often. I know that dad will miss their talks and visits down memory lane. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you deal with the loss of this fine man.
