Sanford Craig Roberts, 64, of 28 Green Valley Road, Asheville, died Monday, August 8, 2005, at his residence. A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late Sanford McCormick and Mae Grooms Roberts. He had a distinguished career as a Nationwide Insurance agent for 32 years. He was a US Navy veteran, a former president of the Candler Lions Club, a member of the Beekeeper Association, a bicycling enthusiast and attended Hominy Baptist Church. Mr. Roberts led his life as a gentleman and a scholar. The world is a better place for having had him in it and we are better people for having known him. A loving husband, wonderful father and a proud papa, he will be greatly missed by his wife, Phyllis Buchanan Roberts; a daughter, Michele Capel and her husband Joe of Candler; a son Mike Roberts and his wife Traci of Candler; two grandchildren, Breanna Capel and Sydney Roberts, both of Candler and a brother, Jack Roberts and his wife Dorothy of Asheville. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Drs. Joe Yelton and Fred Werhan officiating. He will be laid to rest at Pisgah View Memorial Park Mausoleum. His family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 am Thursday prior to the service and request that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, PO Box 016960 (R48), Miami, FL 33101-6960. The family would like to thank Mountain Area Hospice as well as the individual in-home care givers for their care and support. A special thank you is extended to Christy Hall for her extraordinary dedication and excellent care for the past six years.

  4. I am very thankful for having known Craig and I have known him all of my life. Craig’s office was next to my fathers office when I was young & he always had candy and lots of patience with curious children. He was one of the best role models anyone could have. There was no one else like him. He was always there for myself & my family.

    they were and Craig is in Bula Land.

  10. I was an adjuster with Nationwide for 16 years and Craig was always there to lend a helping hand and support. He stood up for what was right and I could always count on his wisdom. I am deeply saddened by his passing. My Dad passed just about the same time. So, I share your loss very personally.

    So sorry to learn of the loss of Craig. He sure did fight a long and hard battle. I know how hard it is to lose someone so dear. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers. I would only hope that I would be as blessed with devotion, patience,caring and love as I witnessed between you and Craig in the time that I helped care for him. I’ll miss him, he was a wonderful man. Craig is no longer in pain and he’s doing his own ROM’s now, may you find peace in knowing that. He is now ‘walking’ on the streets of Gold and breathing with ease. If you ever need anything please call me.

Mike,I am so sorry to hear of your loss of your dad.I will have to say he was a dear friend,i remember all the talks and advise i got from him as we sat on the bench in front of the old sandhill grocery building,our many trips to the flea markets,and the trips we took to the lake together,he was a great help to me when i needed anything.I always knew his advise was the best i could get,i know he is now well and at peace with the Lord.May the Lord bless your family during this time in your life.My prayers are with you.
