Sarah Virginia Knight Ray

Sarah Virginia Knight Ray, 92, of the Laurels of Summit Ridge, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, at her residence. A native of Honea Path, SC, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Lela Ann Gassaway Knight. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William Frank Ray, who died in 2002 and by a granddaughter, Donna Lynn Gantt, who died in 1974. She worked as a private duty nurse and was a member of Deaverview Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Gantt and her husband Charles of Asheville; a son, William Gene Ray and his wife Carol of Lakeland, FL; four grandchildren, David Ray, Kristen Ray, Nathan Gantt and Jeremy Gantt and one great grandson, Ian Gantt. Funeral services will be 4:00 pm Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Lee Roy Denton officiating. Burial will follow at Hice Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service and request that memorials be made to ABCCM, 24 Cumberland Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801.
