Scott Trent Smith, 61, passed away Monday, June 20, 2022, at his home following a brief illness.

Scott was born January 27, 1961, in Asheville to Janice Melton Smith and the late G.D. Smith, Jr. He was a graduate of A.C. Reynolds High School and he worked in the family enterprises, Smithway, Inc. and Smith Farms, Fairview. Scott enjoyed horseback riding, camping, hunting, fishing and almost everything outdoors.

In addition to his mother, Janice, his family includes his wife Tonya McLaughlin Smith; a son, Noland Smith; step-daughter Kristie McLaughlin; grandchildren, Trent and Nina; brothers, Rocky Smith (Dee), Rod Smith (Angie) and Tony Smith, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 5:00 p.m. Friday at the Conference Center of Smith Farms, 20 Smith Farms Road, Fairview.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital (donors@StJude.org) or to Volunteer Horsemen of the Smokies, 160 Curly Oaks Dr., Clyde, NC 28721.

  1. I am so sorry for this loss. I graduated with Scott at Reynolds. He was sweet and quiet until you got to know him then he was funny and very quick witted. I know his loved ones will miss him! Prayers for peace!

  5. Scott was one of my most favorite people in school…quiet, very funny and always so kind. I’ve often thought about him over the years and wondered how he was doing. I’m so saddened to hear of his passing. Prayers for peace to his family and loved ones.

  6. Scott was one of the kindness people we have known. He was always took time to say hello, ask how Jeff and I were doing and to help me to maneuver through the activity on the floor at Smithway. Especially when I first started calling on the plant and I really needed a familiar face. We know how much he will be missed and are keeping everyone in our thoughts and prayers.

  16. Janice, when I got the prayer chain call from church my first thoughts were of you. I never got the pleasure to meet Scott but if he was anything like Rod then all was good. Rod, please give your mother a BIG hug from me. Take very special care of her, I miss all of you at church. I’m not sure if I can make it to the farm Friday, but I’ll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
