Shirley Ann (Marlowe) Whiteside, 86, of Mills River, died Monday, June 13, 2022 at Mission Hospital.

Born in Henderson County on January 7, 1936, she was the oldest daughter of the late Owen O. and Helen (Carland) Marlowe. She was the wife of the late Wade Maurice Whiteside, to whom she was married 45 years until his passing in 2002 from cancer.

She attended Mills River High School and was a graduate of Mars Hill College, 1956. Shirley retired from the Federal Aviation Administration after 30 years of service, retiring in 1994.

She loved gardening, flowers, and yardwork. Shirley collected dolls, hummingbirds, and pottery, and looked forward to visits from her sons and grandsons. She enjoyed being with the Red Hat Ladies.

Shirley is survived by two sons: Wade Michael Whiteside (Bette) of Mills River and Gary Maurice Whiteside (Laura) of Raleigh; two grandsons: Patrick Michael Whiteside (Courtney) and Judson Campbell Whiteside (Karina); one brother, Richard Marlowe (Dorothy) of Mills River and one sister, Judy Moore of Hendersonville; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 17, 2022 at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard with Rev. Jay Clarkson officiating. Friends and family will be received in the church following the service.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
