Shirley Gearhart Hartman Carter, 73 of Fletcher went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior; on Friday January 6th at the Elizabeth House.
She was a loved member and organ player at Mills Gap Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her Parents James Eugene Gearhart Sr & Aldine Gearhart Higginbotham Jackubowski, and brother Timothy Gearhart.
She is survived by her loving husband of 23 years Ricky Carter of Fletcher; a son, David Hartman (Mary) of San Jose California; a daughter, Noel Carter of Fletcher; two brothers, James Eugene Gearhart Jr. (Nancy) of Jacksonville FL, and Tom Gearhart (Jean) of Roxboro NC; one sis, Arlene Maguire of Barefoot Bay Fl. Shirley also had one cherished grandson, Devin Hartman of California. She was loved and cherished by many nieces and nephews.
She received her master's degree in Music from Mars Hill College, She taught piano for many years; as well as working as a K mart associate. She made many friends and acquaintances during her 30+ years as an Avon representative.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Mills Gap Baptist Church Building fund at 370 Mills Gap Rd Asheville NC 28803.
A Celebration Of Life will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 6 pm at Mills Gap Baptist Church with Reverends Tom Gearhart and Jeff Wilkie officiating.
Ms. Shirley spent many years caring for the gardens at Mills Gap Baptist Church, where she also loved playing piano for the kids during Vacation Bible School. She loved her Church, loves the Lord and today is celebrating in perfect peace with Him.

Rick, Noel, and family…..We were blessed to get to know Shirley over the past few years. She always had a smile and something positive to say even when I know she was feeling bad. She was a true inspiration. Praying that God wraps you all in his loving arms until that glorious day when we met him and our loved ones in the air. Ricky, Noel and Family: We are so sorry for your loss. Shirley blessed everyone she came into contact with. We will be remembering everyone in our prayers. We are so thankful that we were able to have her as part of our lives. She will be missed by all. Cling to Jesus and hold onto the precious memories you have. Rick and Noel we are so sorry to hear about Shirley. We didn’t see her but just a few times but she seemed like a really sweet person. God blessed your lives when he brought you together. We will keep you in our Prayers.
