Shirley Henson Kinman, 80, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, January 13, 2023.
A native of Walhalla, SC, Shirley was the youngest of 11 children to the late Jesse Lane and Beulah Estelle Nix Henson. In addition to her parents and five of her siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. (Jim) Kinman, and foster parents J.D. and Lillie Parker, Jr.
Mrs. Kinman was a longtime and active member of Bent Creek Baptist Church. After graduating beauty college, she enjoyed a career at Winners Salon, in Asheville. She later became a full-time homemaker, raising her sons. Years later she was employed by Vanderbilt Shirt Co. as their receptionist, a job she truly enjoyed.
She is survived by her sons, Scott McDowell (Soli) and Philip McDowell (Stephanie); grandchildren, Anna and Jordan McDowell; sisters, Margie, Maureen, Jean, Ann; brother, Jack (Georgia); sister-in-law and best friend, Doris Case; and her sweetheart, Charlie Drake.
Her family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Kelvin Moseley will officiate. Interment will then take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staffs at Mission Hospital, CarePartners Hospice and Carolina Mountain Pharmacy.

Shirley was one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever known. She treated my just like one of her own boys. Scott and Phil, I remember how y’all always treated her like the princess she was. She’s an angel now.
My thoughts and prayers for Philip, Scott and the family. Shirley was one of the kindest neighbors. I will miss her sweet smile and our conversations. She always shared her love of Jesus Christ.
